Yesterday (Friday) I decided to go to the Appomattox Court House (here) about 30 minutes east of school. It's fitting because the day before I gave a speech on Mary Surratt (both having to do with the Civil War.. ish.. research it :D). So anyways I spent about 3 hours at the national park and I had so much fun! :) I was happy that I went even though I went by myself. I don't really mind doing things by myself, so it's kind of an adventure. Sometimes I even talk to myself and make up stories in my head. lol. I'm sane I promise. :)
So basically Appomattox was the place where General Lee (Confederacy) and General Grant (Union) signed an agreement to end the war. The union won! ...(obviously...) lol. So they signed the agreement in a man's house by the name of McLean (which by the way had an amazing house!). So the whole town is really cute! I'll just go ahead and post some pictures. :)
The surrender.
I got one of these! :)
Meek's General Merchandise
So they did these things where the person would act like actual people from the time period. It was really cool. The guy on the right was really attractive in person. :) Just saying..
Inside a jail cell.
McLean's house. In the parlor where the agreement was signed.
Ok so like I said the house was amazing. I'll try to explain it. It was a simple (but big) house that was basically divided in half. So on the main floor to the left was the parlor (seen above) and to the right was the parents room. On the top floor was two kids bedrooms (they had five kids). (Pictures below). And then in the basement on the left side was the warming room and on the right was the dinning room. I really liked how it was set up. Reminds me a little bit of a british home.
One of the kids bedrooms.
Far corner.
With play space in the middle. What a nice room. What kid wouldn't love this?!
I loved the openness of the stairs/hallway. It's interesting how the handrail was really low.
Parents bedroom.
BOOKS! :)
Dinning room.
Outside the back of the house.
Inside one of the slaves room.
House in the back with slave housing on the left and the kitchen/slave housing on the right.
FOR TODAY:
After going to the gym this morning I couldn't think of anything to do... and I didn't want to be lazy. So I decided that I'd go out and shoot some pictures. I then remembered about the farmers market downtown. So I decided to head downtown and see what would come of it.
I first checked out the farmers market. I was sad that I didn't have any cash on me cause there was some amish homemade sweet bread that was looking really good as well as some peaches and cherries.
I checked out this antique store that I've been in before. It's pretty neat. It's huge and has so many things. It doesn't smell the best.
I love old pictures. It's fun to think of who these people where and the life they lived.
Then I drove around for about 30 minutes in the direction of the mountains to see if I could find a place to take pictures. I came across these guys on a farm.
I started seeing signs for this so I was like hey I'll check that out... But sadly it was really small and looked closed so I didn't even go in.
On my way back I stopped at Goodwill.
I kind of wanted to get this cup. It's so cool. It reminds me of Arizona/New Mexico in the 90's. :D
I sooo almost bought this. I was thinking it could come in handy some time. lol. You never know in college. :)
